Waste service change
With the main proportion of our work coming from promoting waste and recycling in partnership with local authorities, contractors and government agencies we are often faced with the challenge of implementing service changes.
What are service changes? They can be anything from small changes to the materials collected, a move to alternate weekly collections (AWC) or a complete alteration of the way people collect waste and recycling in an area. These major changes often occur when councils merge or recycling collections are taken over by a contractor.
A smooth transition
With the logistical challenges of the technical implementation of service changes it is common for people to find communicating the changes to local residents hard to manage. It is, however, essential. To understand the importance of getting the communications side right we have to look at the consequences of getting it wrong.
If collection days and details are misunderstood residents are likely to:
- Put materials out for collection on the wrong day
- Leave the wrong materials out for collection with the possibility of contaminating and reducing the yield of recyclates
- Contact the council, using an unnecessary amount of resources and time
- Find the process frustrating and therefore be less inclined to participate in any voluntary scheme
With this in mind we always work to create an introduction that uses multiple sources of information. With both preparatory and instructional leaflets, advertising, displays and corrective information cards and hangers we can rapidly educate the resident, ensuring that the problems listed above are minimised or rendered non existent.
It is through this targeted, cross media approach that we can reach every resident in extremely diverse areas, helping to ensure that everybody is given the opportunity and information to participate correctly.
