A focus on translations

It is a requirement that all local authorities in the UK provide those members of the community who, either due to disability or language, cannot read normal campaign literature. With an inclusive approach we can raise the effectiveness of our campaigns and allow the many willing members or the public who cannot be reached by normal literature and advertising.

Language translations

We have the good fortune to live in a country with a diverse and varied range of cultures, nationalities and languages. This broad mosaic can however bring problems with communication, particularly in groups where English is not the first language. Where an understanding of written English is limited or absent the production of alternate language versions is greatly appreciated.

One of the things we often see from other design and communications agencies is that the translated versions of original artwork are often haphazard and neglect the quality and effort put into the original. We think this is a major mistake. The original artwork was created not only to look good but to communicate the strength of your brand, create an aspirational appeal and persuade the viewer that participation is worth while.

Taking this into consideration we always work with the original artwork and matching fonts to create an interpretation that brings the highest standards of the original into the translated version. For low print runs digital print gives top quality combined with great value.

Large print, brail and audio

Another frequent request we have are for transcriptions that are suitable for visually impaired residents. There are three main options.

The first is to create a large format version for those people with a lesser degree of visual impairment. These are often simply larger versions of existing leaflets, i.e., a leaflet whose pages are an A5 format are scaled up to A4. These are once again printed on digital presses to allow small and cost effective print runs and on demand production. If this approach is not suitable artwork can be rearranged with larger type and if necessary, more pages, to make sure that the content is clear. 

The second option, and one suited for all levels of visual impairment, is audio transcriptions. The original text is recorded, after being amended first if necessary, onto either cassette or CD. This is a very reasonably priced service and the format options allow users of different technologies to be accommodated. Once recorded further copies can be supplied quickly and easily upon request. 

The third option is Braille. We can have any of our leaflets transcribed into any of the major Braille formats in small or large quantities.
