London Borough
of Tower Hamlets
London Borough of Tower Hamlets has a range of households include street level houses and high rise flats. We have worked with them and their waste and recycling contractor Veolia across a range of campaigns.
Below are a few examples of the work we have carried out with them:
Recycling from flats
With a high proportion of residents living in flats Tower Hamlets recognised the need to expand their service to allow them to recycle easily at home. A series of trials were set up to test different methods of collection.
Food waste caddies were supplied for use in the flats and large exterior bins were placed outside to empty them into. For dry recycling a co-mingled scheme was used with residents placing the recyclables in pink plastic bags. These were then placed into bins, either at communal bin stores or in specialist bins on each flat level. A third alternative was for the residents to use their refuse chutes to recycle. Introductory leaflets were used to prime the residents before the service began and clearly illustrated instructional leaflets, featured below, were used to tell them how to get the best from the service.

Posters
Posters were put up at points of entry and on each floor to promote the service and inform residents where the collection points were.

Stickers
Stickers make a quick, effective and permanent way of re-enforcing the materials that are collected. These illustrated stickers were used on food caddies and outside bins. To ensure their permanence they are weather and UV proof.

Office recycling
To coincide with the introduction of recycling in flats Tower Hamlets offices were supplied with their own specialised bins for co-mingled collection of recyclables.

Once again introductory leaflets, posters, instructional leaflets, flyers and identifying stickers were amongst the media used to promote the scheme to council staff.
