Birmingham City Council
As the largest local authority in the UK and in Europe, serving over a million people, Birmingham City Council (BCC) relies on having good communications and reliable delivery of its promotional campaigns. We have had a long and successful relationship with BCC and continue to help them achieve these aims. Below is a small selection of the work we have produced for them:
Identity guidelines
We worked with BCC to help develop their design identity guidelines prior to producing any design work. they recognised the importance of developing a consistent visual identity for their waste and recycling services.
Recycling and waste identity guidelines
This comprehensive guidance covers everything from colour schemes through to typography, leaflet design and delivery of campaigns. This has allowed BCC to create a strong, successful and recognisable brand amongst users of their recycling and waste services.
Food waste campaign
Food waste campaign pop-up display, magazine advertising and bus livery
A wide range of different forms of media were used from leaflets to magazine adverts. Vehicle livery spread the message city wide and pop-up displays were used for both temporary and permanent promotions.
Translation leaflets
Birmingham's population is an amalgam of many cultures. With this comes the problems of language barriers, inhibiting communication.
Bengali translation of one of BCC's collection leaflets
To counter this, and to fulfil BCC's obligation, we regularly translate campaign material into a wide variety of languages. These are then made available as short run prints when requested or as PDF downloads from the website. This helps to raise awareness and recycling rates and makes sure that the entire community is included in all campaigns.
Recycling Week campaign
To promote recycle week a range of photographic posters were created using the WRAP Recycling Week promotional material, localising it to Birmingham

These examples show a small cross-section which were backed up by further advertising and literature
Pop up displays
Pop-up displays have proven to be extremely useful. They have the advantage of mobility and are ideal for both temporary and permanent displays.
Illustration based electrical items pop-up and garden waste collections display using photographic iconography
We have produced a wide range of pop-ups for Birmingham City Council. These have utilised imagery and iconography in both illustrative and photographic forms.
Recycling literature
We have produced a large range of literature for BCC over the years.
An example of a BCC garden waste calendar
This has included service leaflets and collection calendars for all their recycling and waste services.
Photographic flats recycling leaflet
To further increase recycling rates BCC has installed communal recycling bins in flats. Alongside various promotions every flat received one of these leaflets showing what can and cannot be recycled.
Real nappies information and order form
To help curb the enormous amount of nappies being sent to landfill each year a scheme to promote re-usable nappies was launched that included extensive advertising. These leaflets provided information and order forms to buy real nappies and claim a subsidy provided by BCC.
Student hall posters
With a large and environmentally aware student population, BCC installed recycling facilities in its student halls. Posters were posted in student accommodation and in university buildings to raise awareness.
